Deerhunter – Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared
Named after the late French author Jean Baudrillard’s 2007 book, Deerhunter’s eighth full-length arrives with a lot of the same pragmatic uncertainty we’re all suffering from right now.
Billed as “a science fiction album about the present,” the band fittingly recorded a large portion of Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? in the desolate, forgotten town of Marfa, Texas, fresh off some improvisational recording sessions Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox did with dark pop band DRINKS singer song writer Welsh born Cate Le Bon.
With Le Bon involved, Deerhunter found new inspiration and an opportunity to explore uncharted territory, resulting in the exotic, Japanese-tinged synths of “Détournement,” Lockett Pundt’s “Tarnung,” which leans heavily on vibraphone and sax, and some jarring vocal edits on closer “Nocturne.”
However, by retaining the help of regular collaborator Ben Allen, Deerhunter have also turned in some of the most accessible work they’ve done to date. “Death in Midsummer” is textbook Deerhunter, using guitar noise and a waltzing harpsichord to battle the anxiety of living in a fading world, while “Element” and “Futurism” express a blissfulness we’ve rarely heard from them. But the finest moment comes courtesy of James Dean’s ghost, which haunts the ebullient “Plains,” a song that sought energetic guidance from Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know.”
In the press release for Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? it questions the relevance of an album in today’s algorithmic world; Deerhunter shouldn’t be concerned with such things. They continue to look forward and create music that feels unlike anything else out there. This one is no exception: it’s the perfect antidote for these bleak, modern times.

Lee Fields & Expressions Format – It Rains Love
Lee Fields has seen a lot of changes since he released his first single “Bewildered” 50 years ago. A musical journeyman, he’s seen and done it all but, when things got hard, he has never given up. Like some of his musical counterparts, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, Fields found musical success later in life, which allows him to pull from a deep well of personal stories, feelings and experiences. Nowhere is this more evident then on his latest release It Rains Love.
It Rains Love is a ten song ode to love as told only as Fields could tell it, in his worn, classic, powerful voice. Title track It Rains Love is a traditional soul track with some some non traditional keyboard sounds. It’s a unique touch to a great song.
Wake Up is a pointed commentary on the current political climate. Fields is asking people to wake up and focus on the truth, not the fake news. Not sure who to trust or believe, it adds a whole new meaning to the phrase “Can I get a witness?”
A Promise is a Promise really lets The Expressions bring out the sun and shine. From the bongo drum solo to the vocal riffing over the guitar solo to the horns jumping in with their tight hook, it’s a song that starts showcases not only Fields, but the talented musicians he has surround himself with.
As the final “soul” survivor of the big three from NYC that helped bring back classic sounding soul to the mainstream, Fields steps up and delivers. Put down your umbrellas and step outside… It’s Raining Love. -Brad Simmons
