Aretha Franklin – I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (180 Gram Vinyl)

Weekly Review:

Aretha Franklin started singing at her father’s church as a child, but it wasn’t until this 1967 release, on
the cusp of Franklin’s 25th birthday, that she became the Queen of Soul.
During Franklin’s six-year contract with Columbia Records, she was placed in front of large orchestras
and big bands. When she hopped over to Atlantic, starting with I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You,
producer Jerry Wexler knew how to play to Franklin’s strengths.
For the title song and lead single, Wexler brought Franklin down to Muscle Shoals, Ala. to work with the
local crew of musicians known as the Swampers. When the sessions in the Deep South ended on a sour
note, Wexler flew the Swampers up to New York City to continue recording with Franklin.
From the familiar first notes of “Respect,” the album opener and No. 1 hit single, to the fading notes of
“A Change Is Gonna Come,” Franklin’s voice and the Swamper’s down-home, gospel-laden playing
refuse to let the music fade into the background. As the songs slip from soul to blues to gospel, from
dance numbers to ballads, Franklin’s powerful voice demonstrates why more than half a century after
it’s release, I Never Loved a Man remains a captivating and essential release. -Joel Francis

Def Leppard – Diamond Star Halos (Limited Edition, Clear Vinyl, Indie Exclusive)

Weekly Review:

On their first album in seven years, British pop metal heroes Def Leppard play to their strengths. Swiping
the album title from a T-Rex song, Diamond Star Halos bangs out of the gate with a trio of catchy
numbers that recall the band’s arena-rock heydays of the 1980s.
“Take What You Want,” “Kick” and “Fire It Up” check all the boxes: bombastic guitar solos, catchy riffs
and sugary (sorry) choruses perfect for singing along. It’s a lot of fun, but the good times get to be a little
much by the time “U Rok Mi” comes around halfway through the album.
The Lepp mix things up by sprinkling several ballads throughout. “This Guitar” features Alison Krauss
pops up twice to offer duet vocals on “This Guitar” and “Lifeless.” The band has tried for country
crossover hits before, but have never been too convincing. “Angels (Can’t Help You Now)” and
“Goodbye for Good This Times” feature David Bowie’s pianist Mike Garson and are slices of adult
contemporary in the vein of “Two Steps Behind.”
Longtime Def Leppard fans will find a lot to love on Diamond Star Halos. At, 15 songs and one hour, it
would be a much better listening experience by trimming three or four songs. Fortunately, this can be
easily achieved by skipping one side of an LP when playing the album. -Joel Francis

The Get Up Kids – Live at the Granada Theater (Limited Edition) + On a Wire (Limited Edition)

Weekly Review:

A pair of recent reissues showcase the Kansas City, Mo.-based emo pioneers the Get Up Kids
experimenting with their sound and summarizing their best numbers.

The dawn of the new millennium found the Kids at the top of their game. They shared the stage with
Green Day and Weezer and laid the foundation for up-and-coming emo bands such as Fall Out Boy and
Dashboard Confessional. Over the winter of 2001 and 2002, the Kids recorded their third album with
R.E.M. producer Scott Litt.
On a Wire was slower and more measured than the high-octane songs with big pop hooks displayed on
previous material. Fortunately, the songwriting was still there, making On a Wire the album to play to
come down at the end of a long day (or night).
Several songs from On a Wire earned a permanent spot at Get Up Kids shows, including the singalong
“Campfire Kansas” and the catchy “Stay Gone.” These songs both earned a place on the band’s only live
album to date, recorded in Lawrence a few days before the group broke up.
Live at the Granada is a great celebration of the band’s catalog up to that point. (They broke up shortly
after the show documented here, got back together in 2008 and have released two albums since then).
The energy in these 18 songs is so infectious it’s impossible to listen to this album without jumping
around the room. The audience becomes a sixth band member, adding enthusiastic vocals. It’s a fitting
celebration for a band worth celebrating. -Joel Francis

Orgone – Lost Knights (Red & Yellow Colored Vinyl, Indie Exclusive)

Weekly Review:

Los Angeles-based funk band Orgone started as an instrumental ensemble backing rappers in the late
‘90s, but soon blossomed into their own thing. In the past, the band has delivered instrumental versions
of Isaac Hayes and K.C. and the Sunshine Band songs and opened for Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
On the quintet’s latest album, R&B and soul have been repurposed into ‘70s acid rock along the lines of
Buddy Miles or Rare Earth. Guest vocalists feature on five of the album’s nine tracks and enhance the
hard rock vibe. On “Burn,” Phil Diamond warns “the cities are on fire” and filled with “the prostitutes of
wealth” as guitars divebomb and drums thunder. One song later, singer Jesse Wagner from the
Aggrolites calls for a party until the dawn on “Lay Your Life Down.”
Lost Knights is swaps out horns and funky grooves for wah-wah guitar and rhythms that call for more
cowbell. At around four minutes a track, Orgone don’t get caught up in the extended improvisations
that characterize “Inna Godda Da Vida” and “Get Ready,” but if someone threw this on at a party, you’d
swear it was the latest underground offering unearthed by the Numero Group and came with a lava
lamp. -Joel Francis
