Kelly Finnigan – The Tales People Tell (Red)

Kelly Finnigan is not new to the game. He’s been fronting the funk-soul group the Monophonics for the past decade. What is new is his latest release, a solo album called “The Tales People Tell” which is released on Colemine Records (home to Durand Jones and many other quality bands). This album is predominately soul, which is a bit of a departure from the heaver funk sounds of the Monophonics, but Finnigan feels right at home, delivering a how to of the various soul styles over his ten track masterpiece.
Opening track “I Don’t Want To Wait” hooks you right out of the gate with a harmonized “I Don’t Want to Wait.” Word is that Finnigan crated a lot of his own harmonies by standing in different parts of the studio to create the sound of backup singers.  His voice is strong, with a sense of maturity you’d expect from a veteran of  the music scene.
“Since I Don’t Have You Anymore” evokes feelings of the Rose Royce classic “Car Wash.” The falsetto over the top of the strings and funk drumming create an upbeat song that sticks with you.  “Impressions of You” slows things down a bit. It’s a soulful ballad where Finnigan expresses his love to his one and only. The horns are bright while the organ wanders to all the right places. It’s a great song among many of this album and I am a firm believer that any soul fan should have a copy of this in their collection. Come down to the Vinyl Underground to pick up a copy and then go see Finnigan at the Record Bar on Tuesday, the 28th. Hope to see you there! -Brad Simmons
