Mumford & Sons – Delta

Marcus Mumford and his kin surely didn’t come to name their album Delta without giving it some deeper thought. Sure, there is the obvious, Delta, the fourth letter in the Greek alphabet is an obvious choice for your fourth album. But if you dive into the album, you will find Delta has a deeper meaning. Like a river delta, this album has elements of the previous three albums flowing through it with the end result being bigger than the original sources.
Take the title track Delta for example. It starts slow, with an almost exploratory guitar tone that morphs into a solemn yet somehow optimistic mix of up strokes and downtrodden lyrics. It builds into a huge chorus, only to quickly shift directions like the river that feeds, it into what can only be described as someone drumming on an aluminum trashcan. It’s oddly satisfying, especially when the banjo comes and the layers start to build to the point where it all comes crashing together almost 5 and a half minutes into the song. Its a swirling blend of the folksy roots that planted and the more anthemic sound they have grown into.
The pub anthems of Babel & Sigh No More have given way to amphitheater anthems complete with orchestra accompaniment. Sure, Winston Marshall finally remembered where he put his banjo on a few tracks, but this album is a progression of Wilder Mind. The first single off the album Guiding Light could have found a happy home on that album. It’s a great song, but it builds more like U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For than the songs than Roll Away Your Stone.
Mumford and his kiddos keep shifting and moving, like the rivers that drove them to the delta. -Brad Simmons
