Leon Bridges – Good Thing

Weekly Review:
Leon Bridges found his sound at just the right time.  His retro sixties soul vibe started to gain popularity and launched him into the spotlight. That year,  Nathaniel Rateliff’s S.O.B. went to number 1 on the Adult Alternative charts and the Alabama Shakes were more than just the next morning after a night out in Birmingham.  The revival sound was in full swing, and Bridges was the band leader.
On his latest release, Good Things, Bridges expands his soulful sound into R&B and Funk.  Growing up in the 1990’s, Bridges loved modern R&B, and now that he is home, we are all witnesses to his homecoming with the music he loved growing up.
Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand is the perfect transition from the old into the new. Bridges rides soaring strings like the tide throughout the song, ending with a dream like harp to transition into the driving Bad Bad News.  Bridges’s traditionalist will feel right at home with Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand.  Bad Bad News pulls in a driving baseline and combines it with muted horns and a guitar that feels at home on any smooth jazz station.  If anyone can make that combo work, it’s Bridges, with his smooth as butter voice pulling it all together.
On the dance hit Forgive You we really start to see the transition.  It’s the same good natured Bridges, “Put a pillow under your hair, I give you tender love and my care” but with a danceable quality noticeably absent on Coming Home.
Last, I have a bone to pick with Leon… Back in 2015 Leon Bridges canceled his show at the Middle of the Map festival.  He had released a few singles and was gaining popularity from his showcase at SXSW so a spot at the Record Bar in Westport was a natural transition.  Instead, the next step for Bridges was a spot on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.  The song on Fallon was great but did not make up for what was sure to be one of the best sets of the festival.  From there he went on to be featured in an Apple commercial, SNL and wrapped up the year with a nomination for the best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.  Leon, I forgive ya, though my friends tell me not to.  🙂
