Barenaked Ladies – Stunt

Weekly Review:

It’s been… 20 years since Barenaked Ladies released their fourth and most successful studio album “Stunt.”  I remember buying this album after hearing the first single off the album “One Week.” The catchy rap rock track took over the airwaves my sophomore year of high school and opened up my world to this wonderful gift of a band from Canada.

Let’s be honest. “One Week” is the reason this album took off.  The song is action packed with pop references and clever rhymes. It’s nonsensical but fun, which is pretty typical of what you would expect from a band called Barenaked Ladies.

“It’s All Been  Done” is cleverly simple. How simple? Well part of the chorus is “Whoo hoo hoo.” Don’t mistake simple for bad.  Word is Steven Page wrote this song after being embarrassed about how “wordy” the song “Brian Wilson” was.

When Barenaked Ladies played Starlight this summer, they ended the show with the romantic ballad of a song “Light Up My Room.” Make no mistake, the message in “Light Up My Room” is to look on the bright side. And yes, like most things with the Barenaked Ladies the pun is intended.

It’s the second time this album has been pressed on vinyl (as you know, it’s all been done, before…).  The first was a European pressing by Music on Vinyl and a copy could be had for $75 or more on the internet. No need to lose your shirt getting a copy.  The 20th Anniversary edition comes as a 2x LP set on 180 gram audiophile vinyl with an insert. It includes the two bonus tracks “She’s On Time” and “Long Way Back Home” and it costs less than half of what you would pay for the MOV version.
