Weekly Review:

Big Thief – Capacity

“By all accounts, 2017 was a pretty good year for music. We heard from big names and small.  Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Lorde, Paramore and… Big Thief?

Seven months after their first release, Big Thief gave us Capacity, and Capacity gave us Mary.  Mary is a flowy, hypnotic run on sentence of a song that quickly sweeps you away to another place.  Adrianne Lenker’s vocals are passionate and personal.  They wander in a way that only someone who lived in 14 different houses by the age of 8 could wander.  The song pays homage to her grandparents’ house and tells of reconnecting with an old friend.  A comfortable place and a comfortable face help her to relax into her real self. A safe place, not just physically, but emotionally.  NPR says it’s the top song of 2017 and they could very well be right.

Speaking of Mary, Shark Smile is driven by a guitar riff that could have been pulled straight out of the CCR hit Proud Mary. The driving guitar drum combo combined with Lenker’s vocals flowing over the top are the perfect paring. This song is a perfect soundtrack for adventure.

Coma is hauntingly repetitive and deeply personal.  It weaves a tale of someone waking up from an assault and the disorientation and confusion that ensues.  As the vocals begin to build and grow in confidence, so does the sound of the band, perfectly illustrating the growth of our victim.

Big Thief mixes styles and emotions to match the ups and downs of 2017 and as you selectively remember the good times, be sure to remember this album.”

Review of the Week:

First Aid Kit – Ruins

“Ruins is the fourth album by the Swedish sisters in First Aid Kit.  They have come a long way since they were first discovered as teenagers recording Fleet Foxes cover songs on YouTube. The album is beautiful from start to finish, weaving love and heartbreak into a ten song basket of soft songs and big moments.

“Rebel Heart” leads the way and in many ways sets the tone for this album.  The song swells and morphs into a culmination of sound that pushes right into the heartbreak of lost love. In an interview with Consequence of Sound “The ending of “Rebel Heart” begged to be epic, we wanted to take the listener on a journey.” A journey in which the destination becomes a new beginning. In what feels like the songs end, the drummer counts off and into an up-tempo instrumental break that represents the culmination of the heartbreak. “Nothing matters, all is futile, and it’s fading fast. I fell so hard, so blindly, had to come back and find me” soars over the top.  It’s cinematic and thrilling, foreshadowing not only themes but upcoming crescendos throughout the album.

If it’s possible to have a modern nostalgic sound then First Aid Kit has found it the first single on the album, “Fireworks.” It feels like it could have been played at the “Enchantment of the Sea” dance, you know the one, where George McFly and Lorraine share their first kiss? It is full of soaring vocals and arpeggios, and a vocal combination that that compliments each other in ways only sisters can. Inspired by the Everly Brothers and Skeeter Davis classic “The End of the World,” it’s a bit of a departure from their classic sound but in the best way possible.

The “Hem of Her Dress” captures heartbreak in more of a nonchalant way.  The feeling of being dumped but almost kind of expecting it.  “So here we go again” and “Oh I guess that’s the way it goes”… The sound matches the attitude of the lyrics, a bit more free and easy, less polished, more… nonchalant.  Word is the choir at the end is the band, the girls mom and little brother all singing at the top of their lungs.

The band shared a special story about the last song, “Nothing has to be True.” “We’d been to Carter Vintage Guitars where we saw this incredible guitar. It was a custom made, one of a kind Gibson from the 20s with gorgeous star decorations. It was the most beautiful guitar we’d ever seen. The price tag was no joke though. We posted a photo of Klara holding it on Instagram. That same night we had plans to meet up with our friend Jack White. At the end of our dinner, he told us he had gifts for us. He had bought the guitar (!!!) as well as a beautiful mandolin to go along with it. The guitar came with a note that said “write one for all of us on this piece of wood.” So we did.” Noticeably absent from this song are the harmonies, giving it a more stripped and vulnerable feeling. Coming in with the strength of “Rebel Heart” and ending with the softness of “Nothing has to be True” is the perfect bookend to a really enjoyable record.”
