Blues Pills – Holy Moly

Weekly Review:

When you have watched the rock ‘n roll world as long as I have, certain musical developments are not
surprising. It seems axiomatic to me that we Americans quite often fail to notice some of the finest
artists out there who reside somewhere else. When the British Invasion was in full bloom in 1964, sure,
we knew lots of bands like the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, the Who, etc. – but, invariably, we missed out on
many of the finest acts of the day (there were so many, after all). The Pretty Things rocked as hard as
the Stones, for example, yet barely registered a dent in the US market. The British groups, July, and
then, subsequently, Jade Warrior – who shared the same guitarist, (Tony Duhig) – put together some
truly amazing music in the ‘60s, yet, how many of our readers know both these bands well? Truth is…
we frequently miss important stuff out of our reach.
With that in-mind, there is a group out of Sweden called Blues Pills that might benefit from some
extra exposure to a US audience. On their new 2020 album – Holy Moly – Blues Pills features
Swedish vocalist extraordinaire, Elin Larrson; American guitarist, Zach Anderson; bassist, Andre
Kavarstrom; and drummer, Kristoffer Schander The band got its start in 2013 when the US band,
Radio Moscow (with rhythm section: Zach Anderson & Corey Berry), was touring Sweden. When
Anderson & Berry met Elin Larrson, the seeds for Blues Pills were sewn. Radio Moscow’s next stop
was France, where Zach and Corey met the super talented sixteen year-old guitarist, Dorian
Sorriaux. The band took shape (Larrson, Anderson, Berry, & Sorriaux). After a couple of EPs in
2013, Blues Pills released their first long player in 2014. Their debut album went all the way to #5
in Germany (why didn’t I know?). Their successful follow-up in 2016 – Lady in Gold – further
cemented the group’s stardom in Europe.
Fast-forward to the year 2020. The teenage Dorian Sorriaux is not a teen anymore; the guitar
sensation that made the band’s early records rock like Zeppelin is gone, replaced by Zach Anderson
(switching from bass); and the new LP is now here a full six years after their last one. Blues Pills 3rd
long player is a bit different than their first two, but only in subtle ways. In the beginning (on LPs
#1&2), just imagine a band featuring a female who belts out vocals like Etta James, but is a tall
blonde, Swedish girl in a mini-skirt. Next picture this female vocal force teamed with Zeppelin-sort-
of guitar work. Blues Pills new one – Holy Moly – doesn’t alter the successful retro ‘70s Hendrix
vibe the band carefully cultivated the past seven years, but the replacement of Sorriaux (who has
gone solo) and his undoubtedly flashy style, in favor of the more restrained Paul Kossoff-style,
tasteful guitar work shows the group coming together behind their singer. It’s only a subtle change,
(think Free instead of Led Zeppelin), but a satisfying one. The band still rocks hard. What you see
here when you look at the band’s work thus far is a group whose maturing vocalist, Larrson, is the
driving force; the results are there. The musicians are getting better and better backing this
amazing Joplin-like female rocker; good stuff, indeed! -Gordon Fick

Chuck Prophet – The Land that Time Forgot

Weekly Review:

Across his 30 years and dozen-plus releases as a solo artist, Chuck Prophet has become easy to take for granted. He’s always there every couple years with a new album of fantastic songs. In between those albums, Prophet swings through town to remind fans he doesn’t only write smart songs, but knows how to rock them out as well.
The Land that Time Forgot doesn’t buck this formula. Its dozen songs are clever, catchy and concise. The mostly acoustic arrangements are immediate and accessible, like sliding into your favorite pair of jeans or boots.
High points include “Willie and Nilli,” the story of a pair of lovers and their loud stereo that always leaves me grinning and signing along. “Marathon” is an energetic duet between Prophet and his wife, Stephanie Finch. Prophet also memorably pays tribute to punk guitarist Johnny Thunders and his favorite t-shirt. Closing song “Get Off the Stage” sounds like a Wildflowers-era Tom Petty outtake and takes aim at the current occupant of the White house. The performance is angry, but also good-natured enough to be enjoyable once this chapter has closed. Or until Prophet drops another amazing collection on us a couple years from now. -Joel Francis

PJ Harvey – Four-Track Demos

Weekly Review:

PJ Harvey arrived in the early ‘90s as such a fully formed musical presence that not only were her first two albums deemed absolutely essential, but the demonstration recordings she made of that material in raw, embryonic form are vital as well.
Following the path of Dry – Demos, which accompanied her first album, Harvey released the Four-Track Demos collection that provides insight on the making of her second release, Rid of Me. Not every song on Rid of Me received the demo treatment, but the handful of demos for songs left off the album make up for it. If anything, these songs suggest Rid of Me could have been a little longer and remained just as strong.
Regardless, if you’re eager to dig deeper into Rid of Me, Four-Track Demos is the place to be. -Joel Francis

Various Artists – Judgment Night: Music from the Motion Picture

Weekly Review:

Released in 1993, the Judgment Night soundtrack is very much a product of its time. This album-length collaboration brought together some of the biggest names shaping two distinct musical landscapes: grunge and gansta rap.
The guitars and drums are all huge and heavy, eventually blurring into a big Rage Against the Machine-esque soundscape. The MCs acquit themselves slightly better, but many end up discarding any lyrical dexterity to shout over the noise. In other words, there’s nothing on Judgment Night as essential (or groundbreaking) as Public Enemy’s pairing with Anthrax on “Bring the Noise” from a just a couple years earlier. On the other hand, there’s also nothing as embarrassing and ham-fisted as the nu metal that would dominate the end of the decade.
The best moments on this 11-track collection occur when the participants eschew the expected. Sonic Youth are squonky and minimalist with Cypress Hill on “I Love You Mary Jane” (with Kim Gordon kicking in chorus vocals). “Sludgefeast” masters Dinosaur Jr provide a surprisingly nimble and sympathetic backdrop to Del tha Funkee Homosapien’s poetic boasting. And who knew Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul’s overlapping inner geekiness would result in a low-key jam that could keep one smiling for days? -Joel Francis

Weezer – Weezer (Blue Album)

X – Alphabetland

Weekly Review:

Fans of the perennially fantastic punk rock sensations, X, who were lucky (unlucky) enough to catch
their live show here in KC last August are doubtless excited about the new album from X (did I say
‘new’ album from X – it sounds so good to say that!)
First things first: last year’s show was certainly one to remember; the raw energy of these
legendary punk rockers’ talent was clearly on display; the show had so much energy, it was simply
an (X)-ecstatic experience for everyone! Then, all of a sudden, the skies broke open as a terrible
thunderstorm moved in from the west to dampen (and then prematurely end) this great show. If
you attended, you remember three things: 1) great show, 2) bolts of lightning close by, and 3) oh,
crap, it ended too soon.
Maybe that’s why this album gets to me so much? Because last year’s show ended the way it did,
Alphabetland has a strange cathartic feel to me; somehow getting back what we lost? Or, it could
be the fact that – as a longtime fan of the LA ensemble: John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, & D.J.
Bonebrake, – We’ve had to wait 35 years for them to release a new album (yes, we all remember
the band’s promises never to do another album, but that was a long time ago!).
So what’s on this album? What’s it all mean? Will Exene’s lyrics give me greater insight into the
complexities of life? I asked a trusted fellow X fan (after imbibing quite a few) that question as we
listened to Alphabetland (at top volume); yelling loudly, in order to talk over the music, my friend
shouted back, “it doesn’t matter, she’s crazy!” My take: the lyrics don’t have to make sense, do they?
This is punk, we’re only here for the fun! So, if you enjoy staying up late, kicking up the volume, and
maybe even losing consciousness, this album is definitely for you. I’m not going to break down each
& every song. It’s all there: the brilliant songwriting of John Doe, the ragged, intoxicating harmonies
of Exene & John, the solid backbeat from D.J. and the superior guitar of Billy Zoom, who always
impresses. Each of the ten songs is quintessential X. This album screams! Buy it! -Gordon Fick
