Charley Crockett – The Man From Waco (Indie Exclusive)

Weekly Review:

A year and a half ago, country singer Charley Crockett spotlighted the songs of James Hand on the album
Lil’ G.L. Presents: 10 for Slim. Three albums later, Crockett has crafted an album’s worth original songs
that honor Hand and build on his legacy.
Surprisingly, Crockett has released 11 albums since his 2015 debut, yet The Man from Waco is Crockett’s
first album to feature his road band The Blue Drifters and be recorded live to tape. The result is a warm,
relaxed sound that recalls the country singer/songwriter albums of the 1970s, such as Red-Headed
Stranger or Elite Hotel.
In one regard, the album’s 15-track, 45-minute song cycle is a travelogue, winding through Waco, Mesa
and Atlanta, with stops in Dodge City, Denver and Wichita. Along the way, we meet the murderous
housewife July Jackson, dream of luxury travel in a black sedan and wind up a “Name on a Billboard.”
The musical journey is just as ambitious. Crockett and the Blue Drifters incorporate the soulful Muscle
Shoals sound on “Odessa” and New Orleans jazz in “Trinity River,” the story of a dusty, forgotten
gambling town. Bob Dylan even shares a songwriting credit on “Tom Turkey,” a song that features some
lyrics from Dylan’s obscure soundtrack contribution “Billy 4.”
Crockett is so restless and prolific it won’t be long before he’s moved on to his next project. The Man
from Waco is so good, you have to hope he lingers on it a bit longer. -Joel Francis

GA-20 – Crackdown (Purple Colored Vinyl, Indie Exclusive)

Weekly Review:

When we last heard from the blues trio GA-20, they were honoring Chicago bluesman Hound Dog
Taylor. One year later, GA-20 are back with nine original numbers that bring a modern sound to a love of
old school blues.
Album opener “Fairweather Friend” is the type of electric blues boogie that used to come so easily to
the Black Keys. “Dry Run” finds common ground between delta blues and Appalachian country. The
instrumental title song is a psychedelic freak-out that moonlights as a surf-rock homage. “By My
Lonesome” is both a Yardbirds rave-up and punk song.
At just 28 minutes, Crackdown doesn’t overstay its welcome. Instead, the album’s brevity tempts the
listener to flip the platter over at the end of side two and keep the party rolling back up at the top.
Named for an old Gibson guitar amplifier, GA-20’s love of vintage gear and studio techniques place them
in the company of Jack White and Jimbo Mathus from Squirrel Nut Zippers. While GA-20 will no doubt
be a hit with traditional blues fans, the fuzzed-out guitars and danceable rhythms should make GA-20 a
favorite of indie and garage rock fans as well. -Joel Francis
