Weekly Review:
One (of the many) things I love about soul music is that it has feeling. Sure, all music has feeling, but soul has FEELING. There is a certain passion that speaks to me about the music genre. When I hear it, I feel good. Those good feelings are likely contributed to a boost of the hormone serotonin, the chemical in your brain that makes you feel good. It’s not a stretch to assume that a band called the Seratones would make feel good music music. Musically that is exactly what they have done, however lyrically it has a deeper tone. Songs like Fear, Power and Lie To My Face bring thought provoking lyrical context to an upbeat, soulful packaging.
The title track Power is the second song on the album but number one in our hearts. It’s bouncing baseline is punctured by synth organ that breaks through like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. The addition of strings adds a haunting hum to the song that is only outdone by the opening vocals of high school teacher AJ Haynes. “Brighter days coming, but I can’t see, where I’m going, in the dark morning, I hit the ground running…”
Fear is the second coming of Martha Reeves. The consistency of the quarter note strum evokes the feeling that this song was pulled off of a dusty old 45. “Fear is the weight of the world, coming down with no love in return, fear is the weight of the world coming down like the bridges I burn.”
Heart attack is an interesting combo of what sound like traditional Asian sounds and a fuzzy, grinding punk bass line. It’s an unusual combo but it really works. Let’s be honest just about anything Haynes sings on really works. Gotta Get To Know Ya is a funky jam that sounds like it could have found a home on a Fatboy Slim album. The upbeat drum, the driving fuzzy guitar are reminiscent of Weapon of Choice. Add it to your road trip playlist now.
It would have been safe to make only a soul album, but the hybrid of styles and songs and the lyrical complexity packaged in an uptempo soulful candy shell really make it stand out, and like serotonin, that makes me happy. -Brad Simmons
