Cake – Fashion Nugget

Weekly Review:

To paraphrase Marie Antoinette, let us all eat Cake!
For the first time in 26 years, the second album by alt-rockers Cake is back on vinyl. Fashion Nugget is
where Cake’s quirky sound – lead by John McCrea’s spoken/sung vocals, with trumpet in the foreground
– came together.
If you only know one Cake song, there’s a good chance it’s on Fashion Nugget. Hit single “The Distance”
was inescapable upon its release and still frequently pops up in commercials and on TV shows. There’s a
good chance you read the words “the distance” and automatically added “for speed.”
A cover of Gloria Gaynor’s disco hit “I Will Survive” is somehow both ironic and earnest. Propelled by the
funky and nimble interplay between Victor Damiani’s bass and Greg Brown’s electric guitar, “I Will
Survive” struts until the trumpet kicks in and makes the song soar.
The other dozen songs on Fashion Nugget follow a similar template as “The Distance” and “I Will
Survive,” but manage to hold their own over a brisk 48 minutes. Cake is one of those weird bands who
broke through when the underground became mainstream for a hot minute. A group that benefited
from being in the right place at the right time, it’s nice to finally be able to afford Cake’s finest moment
on LP.  -Joel Francis

Dire Straits – Money For Nothing – Remastered

Don Wilkerson – Preach Brother! (Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series)

Dream Syndicate – Ultraviolet Battle Hymns And True Confessions (Violet Clear Vinyl, Indie Exclusive, Digital Download Card)

Deslondes – Ways & Means

Weekly Review:

Roots rock band Deslondes may hail from New Orleans, but the impetus for the quintet’s first album in
five years arrived much closer to home.
Singer/guitarist Sam Doores describes walking down Massachusetts Street, in Lawrence, Kan., where his
parents live, when a call came from violinist/pedal steel player John James Tourville. As told in the press
materials accompanying the album, Tourville wanted to know if Doores was up for making another
Deslondes album. Doores’ response was an enthusiastic yes.
The result is not only the band’s first album since 2017 and fourth overall, but one of the best in their
catalog. Doores, Riley Downing and Dan Cutler each take lead vocals from song to song, giving the album
the feeling of a guitar pull, with each singer/songwriter trying to outdo the others.
Sonically, the Deslondes reside somewhere between their native Crescent City and Nashville,
incorporating the fiddle, pedal steel and other accents common in the Music City, with the laid-back,
R&B shuffle found in New Orleans. The piano, organ and three-part harmonies on “Consider Me” sounds
like The Band, circa Big Pink.
While Doores and Downing both released fine solo albums while Deslondes were dormant, their
synergy, combined with the creativity and musicianship from the rest of the band, makes Ways and
Means a welcome return and enjoyable listen. -Joel Francis

Momma – Household Name
Weekly Review:
After listening to “Household Name” the most recent release by LA morn indie rock band Momma, one might not be wrong in assuming they have been transported by some kind of sonic time machine back to 1995 where bands like Lush, Verucca Salt and The Breeders we’re grabbing covers on the latest issue of SPIN magazine.
Even though the members are quite young, Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten met in high school and they recorded their first album in 2018,  “Household Name” is their third studio LP.
The band appears to be shooting for the stars on this one in a very self consciously ironic way. Aside from the album title tracks names like: “Rip Off,” “Rockstar,” “Lucky,” and “No Stage” all ring reminiscent of the big no sell out/ sellout of 90’s grunge.
But Momma has the riffs and melodies to back it up. The opener “Rip Off” slowly stirs into a dreamy guitar swirl and whispered dual female vocals. The lyrics set the stage for the jaded rockstar voice that runs throughout the record:
A rip off
I’m waiting for your call
I’ve got what you want
Now you’re singing along
To my song
A rip off
“Speeding 72” is an infectious windows down rocker with a killer melody line and juicy hooks that would
make Billy Corgan blush.
Rockstar plays up the rock swagger with a thick jangly tone that rivals anything heard on Nirvana’s Bleach album.
Sonically speaking  “Household Name” plays  within the lines of “loud quiet loud” golden era of indie guitar rock. But their mastering of the form is oddly refreshing.
As a true child of the era it’s really satisfying for me to see the kid’s take on what is now their “classic rock.”
Momma joins a small contingent of female fronted indie bands like Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, & Slothrust who are bending and shaping what was in the past a musical form dominated by self absorbed dudes. Bring it on! – Major Matt
