Jenny Lewis “On the line”

Weekly Review:

Her fourth solo album ‘On the Line’ shimmers like a gaudy neon sign marking the entrance to a dive bar. Beneath the great pop songs, however, there’s a underlying darkness. Like the grimy alleyways skirting Vegas casinos and bars, the endless pursuit of that non-existent American dream – the album stands in contrast to the raw lyrical honesty within.
Jenny Lewis grew up in Las Vegas, where her parents had their own Sonny and Cher tribute act together. Her dad, who passed away in 2010, left their family home when she was three years old. Her mother worked as a waitress, and it was hard for the family make ends meet, until Lewis was plucked out of her pre-school by an acting agent. She became a child star, acting in various TV commercials, shows and films as a kid. Later, Lewis and her late mother – who struggled with heroin addiction throughout her lifetime – became estranged for over 20 years, only reuniting when she was dying from cancer.
‘On the Line’ is dedicated to growing closer to her mother again. On ‘Little White Dove’, we find Lewis and her mother in hospital together; sterile floor numbers making way for a surreal, heavenly fleet of angelic doctors. ‘Wasted Youth’, meanwhile, masks regret beneath a plunking piano. “I wasted my youth on a poppy,” lulls Lewis, perhaps alluding to her mother’s addiction.
‘On the Line’ frequently throws up surprises as she scours the house for Bourbon, Lewis taps into a dark humour. Amid the sadness of ‘Party Clown’, Lewis invokes a surprising source of metaphor: “When I cry like Meryl Streep, when I crack my head wide open, I wanna be next to you,” she sings. And ‘Heads Gonna Roll’ ends on a note that hooking up is good for the soul.
Featuring contributions from Ringo Starr, and Beck ‘On the Line’ is precise and well produced. Much of this production came from Ryan Adams, who Lewis has defended from recent abuse allegations. Without a doubt Lewis’ best work to date, grab a copy today and give it a spin. -Albert Schmurr.

Weekly Review 2

It’s been five years since we’ve heard from Jenny Lewis. Sure, in that time she worked on a side project, but five long years since we have had the pleasure of solo material. It was worth the wait.

Lewis, known for her vivid songwriting and storytelling begins On the Line with tales of heartbreak and revival with a piano ballad called Heads Gonna Roll. It dives into a scenario we have all most certainly found ourselves in, “Took a little trip up north, in a borrowed convertible red Porsche with a narcoleptic poet from Duluth. We disagreed about everything, from Elliott Smith to grenadine.” In an interview she mentioned how she loves the word play and the poetry that makes it all work together. How she makes that work I will never understand, but it does and it’s catchy as hell.

Each song on the album feels unique in its own way, like different legs of a long journey. On Red Bull & Hennessy Lewis channels her inner Stevie Nicks while learning to accept what she cannot change. Do Si Do is a dark low-fi indie rock tune with driving drums and twinkling synths. It’s mention of suicide and grown men cry is Lewis at her lowest. Little White Dove is a down tempo bass driven funky arrangement. Lewis uses her vocal variety and enunciation almost like one of the instruments, keeping things interesting by shortening and elongating each word. By now, we have started to hear from a Lewis that is rebuilding herself back up.

The album culminates in Rabbit Hole, a synth laden pop track that according to Lewis is about overcoming the struggles and heartbreak that the album touches on. It’s the destination on her musical journey in what is described as an almost chronological order of heartbreak to healing.

The various musical styles, the storytelling and the album hitting on all stages of grieving makes this a great album. It’s a story to be listened to from front to back – which makes it the perfect record to own on vinyl. – Brad Simmons
