Weekly Review:

Johnny Marr – Call The Comet

Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has released his 3rd & most cohesive solo album entitled “Call The Comet”, and I’ve been hearing it loud & clear. This album has many facets, yet shines as one complete ambitious showcase of Marr’s talents with a lyric & a guitar.

The band surrounding Marr provide the right amount of edge and atmosphere, enhancing the echo and melancholy of Marr’s guitar work. Songs like “Rise” and “Spiral Cities” are fine examples of the song-writing abilities Marr has perfected over his 36 year-long career. “Hi Hello” may be the only track that resembles a Smiths tune. And my personal favorites – “Day In Day Out” and “Walk Into The Sea” – are both fresh, experimental and creative ideas that are pleasing to the ear.

There is so much to experience on this album…there’s reminisces of The Cult, some Devo, The Cure, New Order – even Pineapple Thief – yet it’s unmistakably stamped with a sound that can only come from Johnny Marr.

“This is the most complete thing I’ve ever done,” Marr recently said about the album. As a listener, I would have to agree…..so much, in fact, I can guarantee this album will make my Top 10 list for 2018 – it’s that good!
