A Guide to Medical Marijuana Smoking Accessories in Kansas City

The medical marijuana wave has (finally) reached Missouri. Licensed doctors are writing prescriptions and cultivation is underway to meet the patient demand. Many patients who receive their medical marijuana ID card are first-time users and may not be quite sure what they need to use their prescription.

At 7th Heaven in Kansas City, we are no strangers to the smoking scene. However, we were all beginners at some point and we understand that walking into a smoke shop for the first time may be intimidating.

As Kansas City’s oldest and most loved smoking accessories store, we are happy to welcome beginners and provide education on the best smoking accessories for their needs.

I have my Missouri medical marijuana patient card… Now what?

If you’ve already completed the application process and received a prescription for medical marijuana, the first thing you’re gonna do is sit tight and wait for dispensaries to start, well, dispensing. The marijuana must first be grown, harvested, and processed before sales can begin.

In the meantime, you can prepare to fill your prescription for the first time by heading to your friendly neighborhood 7th Heaven to pick up the smoking accessories you’ll need.

An overview of medical marijuana delivery methods

If you think medical marijuana is just pot leaves, think again. There are many ways to reap the benefits of medical marijuana and it comes in many forms (though a few pot leaves is a pretty good way to go, just saying ).

We’ll walk you through the most common ways to take medical marijuana below. Keep in mind you don’t have to pick one way and stick to that only. When starting with using your medical marijuana prescription, it’s smart to try different ways to take it, along with trying out different strains to decide what’s best for you.

Smoking

To get immediate payoff and relief of your symptoms, smoking is considered the quickest method for using medical marijuana. Smoking gives you control over your dosage and relieves pain, nausea, and other conditions quickly.

You take a small amount of ground marijuana, along with a pipe, bong, or rolling papers, put a flame to it, and inhale.

Smoking marijuana is considered very safe, but it can feel harsh on the lungs for someone with asthma or other sensitivities. The key is to NEVER strain to “pull” (or inhale) when smoking medical marijuana, regardless of the method you use. Inhaling should feel smooth and easy. (If you are straining hard to inhale through a pipe or bong, it usually means there is build up somewhere, usually in the bowl itself.)

For the most part, after smoking, you should be able to feel the effects of your medical marijuana for anywhere from 10 minutes to 2+ hours.

Edibles

Some people just don’t do smoke, and that’s okay. A way of taking medical marijuana that’s becoming more popular is eating it. This is not to suggest eating dried plant buds, but rather by way of candies and foods (and some drinks) that have medical marijuana infused into them.

Edible doses are precise and pretty tasty, but you will have to be patient with them. After you pop a gummy bear, eat a cookie, or lick the bottom of your bowl of weed ice cream, it takes about one hour for the effects to begin.

Consider yourself warned: if you take more after 15 to 30 minutes because you “don’t feel anything” you might get more than you bargained for (or a really long nap). Typically, the effects of edibles can last anywhere from 2-6 hours, depending on the THC concentration. Most medical marijuana edibles will give you a range of expected duration on its label.

Tinctures

Tinctures are made from cannabis extracts, oil, and alcohol or glycerin. They come in dropper bottles or sprays and can be a good on-the-go method for dosing your prescription.

You’ve probably seen CBD tinctures in a local store or you know a friend who swears by it. (CBD is a non-psychoactive extract of cannabis and there are many great medical benefits of it.)

In addition to CBD tinctures (you can pick some up at 7th Heaven!), there are THC tinctures that can be immediately absorbed into the bloodstream. The effects can be felt much faster than edibles but can last a similar amount of time.

Topicals

If your prescription addresses conditions or symptoms that are relieved by getting high, like epilepsy or PTSD, you will need to use one of the delivery methods above to feel the psychoactive effects of marijuana.

However, for those who get a medical marijuana prescription for chronic pain, many symptoms can be treated with a topical cannabis product in a lotion or salve.

Plus, if you take up working out and pull a muscle or feel sore, picking up a cannabis topical can go a long way to help you feel better.

Dabbing

Dabbing is a way to smoke medical marijuana that takes a potent (and sticky) THC concentrate to a specialized glass bong that’s been heated with a butane torch. It produces much stronger effects than any other method we’ve mentioned and is good for people looking to use medical marijuana to address more extreme symptoms.

However, dabbing is a very advanced smoking method and requires quite a bit of hardware, including a special pipe or bong, a nail, butane torch, cap, and other dab tools. Sound intimidating? That’s understandable.

While we carry all of these medical marijuana smoking accessories at 7th Heaven, we do not recommend dabbing to beginners.

It’s important to note that anytime you try a new strain, delivery method, or smoke accessory overall, that you stay mindful of your environment to ensure you feel safe and comfortable from beginning to end; and that you are never in a situation where you will need to get behind the wheel.

So you want to smoke your medical marijuana? Let’s break down your options

After deciding you want to smoke your medical marijuana, it’s important to get high quality glassware to use. Even if you opt for a super convenient option like a tincture, you may also want to have a pipe, bong, or vaporizer on hand to help “mix it up” and produce different kinds of effects.

Trust us, there’s a huge difference between the smoke accessories (like a pipe, bong, or vaporizer) you pick up at a convenience store or on Amazon, and one from expert glassblowers and high-tech companies. A cheap pipe is very fragile, provides a less-than-stellar smoking experience, and does nothing to support local businesses and artists You should also never smoke from pipe or bong made from rubber or plastic.

Moving forward, when we talk about pipes, bongs, or vaporizers, we’re only talking about the top-quality smoke accessories you can purchase from our shop.

Let’s break it down for you:

Glass hand pipes

Glass hand pipes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They are really easy to carry and use. Most pipes have a large bowl for ground medical marijuana to be placed in with a small hole at the bottom for the smoke to enter the chamber. The chamber delivers the smoke to your mouth. The bowl features a smaller carb hole to the side; while lighting, you will need to cover and uncover this hole with your finger to regulate the right airflow into the pipe.

Beyond function, glass hand pipes are also cool AF. They feature a wide variety of different colors, patterns, and designs to fit your unique style.

7th Heaven has so many pipes and other smoke accessories to choose from, it’ll blow your mind We have glass pipes to suit anyone’s taste from local glassblowers, major artists, and other top-quality sources. Our helpful staff can help you choose the one that best suits your needs.

Water pipes (AKA Bongs)

Certain types of pipes use water (and even ice) to filter the marijuana smoke to lower the temperature and make smoking easier on the lungs. Water pipes, or bongs, are not convenient to carry or travel with due to their larger size. However, they are great for at-home use and they deliver the effects of smoking medical marijuana quicker than a hand pipe can.

A water pipe still has a bowl and chamber, but rather than a carb hole in the bowl, you simply lift the entire bowl (usually via a handpiece) out of the chamber itself in order to regulate the airflow. When you inhale, smoke leaves the bowl, travels through the water in the bong, and travels up (and sometimes down and around, depending on the design of the chamber!) until it reaches your throat.

From small, simple setups to big, crazy designs, 7th Heaven is easily the best water pipe store in Kansas City. Our team has the knowledge and experience to help you find a sturdy water pipe that works for you.

Vaporizers

An even-lower-temperature form of smoking marijuana is vaporizing, or vaping. Vaping is easier on the lungs and it doesn’t produce the, um… distinct smell that smoking does. Vaping requires different hardware, but is an easy way to also immediately feel the effects of your medicine.

Everyone’s heard of vaping, but not many people understand there’s many very safe ways to do it. The type of medical marijuana vaping you’ve probably heard about is purchasing a concentrate or oil cartridge at a dispensary, attaching it to a portable battery, and heating up the oil to inhale the vapor.

While this is certainly a convenient, on-the-go option for many, it’s not the only way to vaporize medical marijuana. To vaporize dried and ground cannabis, some turn to handheld “dry herb” vaporizers or larger table-top vaporizers. These devices heat your medical marijuana without combusting it, making it smoother on the lungs.

We have options for anyone who wants to try vaping with their prescription, from batteries the size of a pen for oils and concentrates, to Volcano dry herb tabletop vaporizers.

Other medical marijuana smoking accessories you’ll need

Now that we’ve given an overview of the primary methods of delivering medical marijuana, it’s time to accessorize. The following items will help you manage your prescription and help keep your smoke accessories clean and efficient.

Grinder

Unless you order a “pre-roll” at a medical marijuana at a dispensary, ordering flower typically means receiving a sealed bag with multiple “nuggets” of marijuana. If you were to try to smoke this as-is, you would not yield very efficient results—and your supply would diminish quickly. So to get your medical marijuana ready to smoke, you’re going to need an herb grinder.

Grinders come in many sizes and feature a removable, magnetic lid with sharp “teeth” that turn marijuana bud into a fine grind that’s easy to put into a smoking device or rolling papers.

You can find all sizes and colors in 7th Heaven’s large supply of medical marijuana smoking accessories! Some even have additional storage chambers for you to grind larger amounts of medical marijuana at a time and keep whatever you don’t use tucked away safely.

Smell-proof pouches & bags

Marijuana in its raw, dried form can be quite pungent. If you want to keep your home from smelling like Cheech & Chong’s house, a smell-proof container is the way to go. At 7th Heaven, we have tons of options, from small pouches to large backpacks!

Lighter

This one is pretty obvious. Come see us for all your lighter and torch needs!

Glass Cleaner

To consume your medicine the most healthy way, it’s important to keep your glassware very clean! Also, if you’ve taken the money to invest in a nice hand pipe or water pipe, you should want to keep it looking and working its best. At 7th Heaven, we have specialized glass cleaners to keep your glass like new.

Screens

You can purchase sets of small, circular, malleable screens, typically made from steel or copper, to place at the bottom of your pipe bowl to act as a filter between the small pieces of ground medical marijuana and your throat. They are typically inexpensive and can be purchased in large quantities, because they can start causing strain fast if not replaced regularly.
