Weekly Review:
The latest effort from Marcus King, El Dorado is a perfect blend of sensuous soul, calming country and blistering blues. Growing up in a very musical family, King has been playing guitar since age 3 or 4, and has been playing professionally since he was 11. At the ripe young age of 23, he has teamed up with Dan Auerbach, who is most famously known as the front half of The Black Keys to produce his first solo record.
Beautiful Stranger is country/soul ballad that weaves a tale of falling for a regular a a local watering hole. King grew up going to church, and there is a very Sunday service sort of feel with the organ and choir like background vocals. In many ways Wildflowers and Wine takes a page from the same hymnal.
The Well feels like it could find a home on any Black Keys album. Musically the driving guitar line and stomping bass drum beat showcases Auerbach’s influence while vocally King brings his Southern religious roots into the lyrics. If this is not the next soundtrack for a GMC commercial, I don’t know what is.
One Day She’s Here is pure perfection. Swelling strings, plinking piano, funk guitar, soulful singing and perfectly timed background vocals have rocketed this song to a current favorite.
If you have not, it’s time to get on board with King. With 12 tracks and just over 42 minutes of music, El Dorado is a solid album from front to back, and one that certainly deserves your attention. -Brad Simmons
