Eddie Vedder – Earthling (Blue, Black, Clear Vinyl, Gatefold LP Jacket)

Weekly Review:

When Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder released his first solo album 11 years ago, it was a modest
collection of songs performed on ukulele. Not so this time. Earthling, Vedder’s second solo release (or
third, if you count his soundtrack for In the Wild), is simultaneously more sonically expansive than a
Pearl Jam album and more intimate.
Earthling finds Vedder trying on different musical styles that reach beyond Pearl Jam’s horizon. “Long
Way” could be a Tom Petty song. Having former Heartbreaker Benmont Tench guest on keys doubles
down on that feeling. Likewise, Ringo Starr shows up to drum on the poppy “Mrs. Mills,” a song in the
style of fellow Beatle Paul McCartney. The fast-paced “Try” rides Stevie Wonder’s harmonica and no less
than Elton John drops by to duet on “Picture. On “The Dark,” Vedder delivers an ’80-style Bruce
Springsteen song, while album closer “On My Way” finds Vedder in barroom crooner mode.
Pearl Jam fans will be pleased with “Power of Right,” “Good and Evil” and “Rose of Jericho,” but it’s hard
to imagine any of the other 10 songs here working on a PJ platter. This allows the album to feel more
casual, like high-profile friends dropping in to help out on a project, not a Big Name Statement. Vedder
has been teased about being too serious since the video for “Jeremy” was blowing up MTV. On
Earthling, he displays the light-heartedness that longtime fans knew was always there without sacrificing
any artistry. -Joel Francis

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Live in Adelaide ‘19, Live in Asheville ‘19, Live in London ‘19, Live
in Melbourne ’21

Weekly Review:

Prolific psychedelic rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are back with another batch of triple-
LP live releases. These new offerings include three shows from 2019 and one from last year.
First up is a winter show from Adelaide, recorded in the band’s native Australia. Half of the night’s 18-
song set comes from the two albums the band would release in 2019, Fishing for Fishies and Infest the
Rats’ Nest. Of the three 2019 shows, Adelaide has the most songs from these albums.
Less than two months after playing Adelaide, the King Gizzard performed in Asheville, North Carolina.
The show that night contains four songs from Rats’ Nest, but draws most heavily from four albums
released in 2017. The band put extra muscle into these songs, resulting in a heavier set than the other
2019 shows.
The 2019 concerts wrap up with an October performance in London. This set has three songs each from
the then-recent releases, but as a treat reaches back to 2014’s I’m in Your Mind, Fuzz for three songs.
Some fans have called this the best show of the tour.
Finally, Live in Melbourne ’21, finds the band back in their home country in February of 2021. This set
focuses on their latest releases at the time, the albums K.G. and L.W. This show finds the band drawing
from all three of their microtonal albums – K.G., L.W. and Flying Microtonal Banana. These albums found
the band incorporating funk, krautrock and folk into their sound and the setlist reflects this diversity.
All of these new concert releases are part of the band’s U.S. Fuzz Club bootleg series and are housed in a
special box that contains exclusive artwork and remastering, a poster and limited-edition colored vinyl. -Joel Francis

Yo La Tengo – I Can Hear the Heat Beating As One

Weekly Review

For nearly forty years the Hoboken, NJ band Yo La Tango has been combing elements of folk, jazz, r&b and experimental noise to stretch and define the genre of indie rock.
Perhaps no album encapsulates the broad scope of Yo La Tango’s sound than their eight studio album, 1997’s “I Can Hear the Heat Beating As One” IMHO.
The album expands upon the guitar-based pop of their previous record Electr-O-Pura borrowing from a variety of other music genres, including bossa nova, krautrock, and electronic music.
Following the somber Velvet Undergroundesque instrumental “Return To Hot Chicken” is the Krautrock inspired “Morby Octopad.” The driving bass line and swirling backwards guitar tracks, coupled with a free jazz inspired piano loop are perfectly held down with drummer Georgia Hubley’s in the pocket drumming. Rumor has it the name was taken from a piece of tape left onstage after the band would follow the artist Moby on the 1995 Lollapolooza Tour.
“Sugarcube” is a ripping shoe gaze track that rivals anything MBV’s Kevin Shields ever produced while “Damage” is moody cinematic piece involving a re encounter with a past love.
“Shadows” features the innocently sweet Mo Tuckeresque voice of Hubley and “Autumn Sweater” is another melancholic mid tempo indie folk tune that pines for time alone with a secret lover.
“Little Honda” is a gnarly wall of guitars Jesus and Mary Chain like rockabilly song while “Green Arrow” is a beautifully soaring guitar instrumental complete with rolling cymbal swells and cricket sounds.
“Center Of Gravity” employs a charming Casio drum machine driven bossanova beat, while “Spec Bebob” (the album’s closer) is a ten plus minute epic noise jam much in the vein of legends German experimental psych band CAN.
This beautiful reissued, 25th anniversary remaster, on yellow vinyl sounds better than ever. It’s a great way to celebrate what Pitchfork appropriately calls “The greatest band in the Universe.” – Major Matt
