The Low Anthem- The Salt Doll Went To Measure The Depth of the Sea

Weekly Review:

The Low Anthem- The Salt Doll Went To Measure The Depth of the Sea

This new release is from one of my favorite bands- The Low Anthem. It’s titled “The Salt Doll Went To Measure The Depth Of The Sea”. Their music is as deep and multilayered as the new album’s title.

I first saw The Low Anthem open for The Avett Brothers. The second time they headlined a three band bill in Omaha with a little known opener named Nathaniel Rateliff. They are always in good company. Their music, and each new album, are journeys down the paths of musical exploration. They are well known for playing obscure, often antique, instruments and for recording with minimal studio interference- until this album.

Following their last album they embarked on a supporting tour, only to have it stopped by a horrific van accident in which all of their cherished instruments were destroyed and all but one member- Ben Knox Miller- were hospitalized and facing lengthy recoveries. Ben went into seclusion with only a guitar and a small recording device- using his voice and mostly found sounds to record the music on this album. My favorite found sound used is all of the percussion heard on the album are from the sound of his turntable needle bouncing in the trail off vinyl. A sound I am familiar with.

This album is sparse, and beautiful, and a wonderful addition to The Low Anthem catalog- because even through its differences everything that I love about this band is still there and singing out loud. Get your copy today. $22.

Sherman.

Titus Andronicus – Productive Cough

Here’s what the label has to say about this one:  “With the release of the new studio album A Productive Cough, the group has executed the most shocking departure yet – but only if, as ever mercurial singer-songwriter Patrick Stickles insists, “you haven’t been paying attention.” In a move that may infuriate the black-denim-and-PBR set, A Productive Cough finds Titus Andronicus setting aside the leadfooted punk anthems of yesteryear in favor of a subtler, more spacious approach that pushes Stickles’ soul-baring songwriting to the fore, creating a conversational intimacy between artist and audience with which previous Titus Andronicus efforts had only flirted.” I, for one, am interested.

Vanilla Fudge – Spirit of ’67
