Bill Evans – Trio ’65

Weekly Review:

On paper, Trio ’65 appears to be a sequel to jazz pianist Bill Evans’ successful outing Trio ’64. However,
more than just the calendar changed between sessions.
Most obviously, Evans is working with a completely different rhythm section on the ’65 recordings. Gone
is longtime drummer Paul Motian and bass player Gary Peacock. In their place are Larry Bunker and
Chuck Israels on bass and drums, respectively.
Bunker asserts his personality early and often across these eight recordings. While Motian was a more
laid-back drummer, Bunker’s fills and sharp bursts of energy push and prod Evans’ playing. You can hear
the push and pull between Evans and Bunker on “If You Could See Me Now.” “Who Can I Turn To?”
opens as a ballad until Bunker enters and gently pushes up the tempo.
Evans’ phrasing and sense of melody on album opener “Israel” demonstrate why he was a go-to pianist
for Miles Davis and Tony Bennett and why his legacy lives on, more than 40 years after his death. Evans
had recorded the songs on Trio ’65 before, but their presentation here make this a high point in Evans’
catalog and a must-own for jazz aficionados. -Joel Francis

Brad Mehldau – Jacob’s Ladder

Weekly Review:

As dedicated as Brad Mehldau is to an acoustic jazz aesthetic with his trio, he seems to try just
about everything with records under his name. He’s recorded alone and with symphonies,
explored roots music with mandolinist Chris Thile and fusion with drummer Mark Guiliana. This
time around with Jacob’s Ladder, Mehldau dives headlong into progressive rock, covering Yes,
Rush, and Gentle Giant.

This new record seems connected to Finding Gabriel, his album from 2019 that also referenced
Old Testament stories. It’s not all in the allusions, though. Mehldau continues his adventurous
approach from Finding Gabriel. Once again, he’s toying with drum machines, synthesizers, and
overdubs. And like Finding Gabriel, Jacob’s Ladder once again prominently features vocals.

Jacob’s Ladder opens with a snippet from “Tom Sawyer.” Next is “Herr und Knecht,” an
original piece that feels inspired by both Rush and Weather Report until a vocalist starts
screaming through Hegel passages. It’s an excellent piece to set the expectations that just about
anything will happen on this album. “Cogs in Cogs” by Gentle Giant is treated as a suite, broken
into three parts. (To be fair, the original song condensed quite a few ideas into such a short song
that it’s easy to understand why Mehldau felt he could pull them apart.) When Mehldau returns
to “Tom Sawyer” later in the album, it’s with Chris Thile on vocals and mandolin. The album
closes with a sprawling take on “Starship Trooper.” Unlike the original version, it’s treated like a
heavenly reprieve and is a fitting end to the album.

The album is audacious in its extremes, with screams that collapse into soft piano passages or
drumming that seems to explode and leave a lush synthesizer pad. Mehldau tries to tie together
themes of ego, the biblical account of Jacob’s Ladder, and his love as a child for progressive
rock. The listener can decide how well everything ties together. He will return to acoustic jazz at
some point, but it is fun to hear Mehldau indulge himself and the listener. -Jonathon Smith

Black Keys – Dropout Boogie

Black Stone Cherry – Live From The Royal Albert Hall… Y’All! (140 Gram Vinyl, Gatefold LP Jacket)

Weekly Review:

Hard rock quartet Black Stone Cherry may hail from Kentucky, but they clearly have English blood. Live
from the Royal Albert Hall … Y’all! Is the band’s third album recorded live in England.
Spread across four sides of wax, the concert was recorded in the fall of 2021 at the famed London venue
in celebration of the band’s 20th anniversary. The 18 songs – plus a drum solo – draw from across the
band’s catalog, with a special focus on last year’s studio release The Human Condition and classic
releases Folklore and Superstition, and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
In press materials, singer Chris Robertson says he grew up watching footage of Led Zeppelin playing
Royal Albert Hall. Robertson and his bandmates definitely bring the hammer of the gods to explosive
performances of “Again” and “Ringing in my Head.” The group stretches out on “In My Blood” and show
off their instrumental chops on the extended “Island Jam.”
Between fan favorites “Lonely Train,” “White Trash Millionaire” and “Again,” and deeper cuts such as
“Yeah Man” and “Devil’s Queen,” Live at the Royal Albert Hall … Y’all! offers something for both
longtime and more recent fans. -Joel Francis

David Bowie – The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (Remastered, Half-Speed Mastering)

Weekly Review:

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (also known as Ziggy Stardust) is the fifth studio album by English musician David Bowie.
Many consider the album to be amongst Bowie’s best, garnering some of his most iconic hits including: Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, and Starman. The record has appeared in countless “best of” album lists, including  Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years” in 1987.
But the original reactions, back in 1972, were by no means collectively positive: NME described Ziggy Stardust as having  “a bit more pessimism” than previous releases and dismissed the songs as “fine”.
Melody Maker published that Ziggy Stardust had “no well-defined story line.” And Rolling Stone, writer Richard Cromelin remarked: “We should all say a brief prayer that his fortunes are not made to rise and fall with the fate of the ‘drag-rock’ syndrome.”
The fictional, androgynous, bisexual rockstar sent to save the world manages to win over fans of earth only after a fall from grace at the expense of his own ego.
The character of Ziggy is rumored to be a compilation of real life rock stars of the time including Vince Taylor and Iggy Pop.
Musical influences were drawn from other gender bending acts of the time like The Velvet Underground and Marc Bolan of T. Rex.
The fact that most of the album’s concept was developed after the songs were recorded could have something to do with the somewhat disjointed concept. But that didn’t keep website Acclaimed Music from declaring Ziggy Stardust the 19th most acclaimed album in history.
According to drummer Mick Woodmansey, Bowie’s previous album Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust were recorded nearly back-to-back. However, the band realised that most of the songs on Hunky Dory were not suitable live material, so they needed a follow-up that they could tour with.
Producer Ken Scott claims most of the tracks were recorded almost entirely live with 95% of the vocals being first takes.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the album’s release Parlophone has reissued a half speed remastered version from the original tapes.
If you don’t already have this one, this is great opportunity. The remaster sounds nice and full in all the right ways, while maintaining the subtle dynamics of this iconic glam rock album. – Major Matt

Frogpond – TimeThief

Weekly Review:

The story of Frogpond begins when singer/guitarist/songwriter Heidi Phillips was a college student living
in Warrensburg, Mo. Phillips, bass player Justine Volpe and a rotating cast of drummers and guitarists
released two albums in the late ‘90s. Frogpond were good enough to create a major buzz in Kansas City
and attract attention from R.E.M. and Everclear, but never caught on nationally. When the calendar
flipped to 2000, Phillips pulled the plug.

But fans never let go. Frogpond’s name would frequently come up in discussions of which local bands
should reunite and Frogpond songs would frequently dot community radio playlists. More than 20 years
later, Phillips started toying with the idea of playing with Volpe again and making Frogpond an all-female
band. That led to TimeThief, Frogpond’s third album and first in 22 years.
Although nearly a generation has passed between releases, TimeThief feels like a natural continuation of
the band’s catalog. The album is steeped in the ‘90s grunge sound. Single “Love Song” could be a
Nevermind outtake. The guitar line on “It’s Not Over” sounds like what R.E.M. might have done on
Murmur processed through their Monster sound.
While TimeThief will please fans pining for the return of Frogpond and ‘90s music heads, it isn’t a strictly
nostalgic exercise. Phillips and Volpe have good chemistry with new bandmates Kristin Conkright and
Michelle Bacon. This makes TimeThief feel more like the continuation of a musical conversation than a
closing statement. Regardless of what is on the horizon, TimeThief is cause for celebration. -Joel Francis
