Robert Finley – Goin’ Platinum (Easy Eye Sound Label)

A carpenter by trade, following time spent as the leader of the Army band in the 70’s the 64-year-old Robert Finley legally blind was discovered singing songs on the street corner. This bit of right place at the right time led to this Louisiana bluesman’s sophomore effort to be produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys on his new Easy Eye Sound label. The result is a lush Nashville soul record. The session players are top-notch – Duane Eddy on guitar, as well as Bobby Woods of the Memphis Boys on the keys. Finley’s versatile voice ranges from Motown holler on the track Medicine Woman to Holy Wine’s heartbroken falsetto croon. A great listen and a lesson that it’s not the age, but the journey.

Head to the basement and pick up the album from the gang at The Vinyl Underground and catch Finley live along with Shannon and the Clams Wednesday April 4th at the Truman. -Albert Schmurr
